The Bishop’s Palace

How to grow your visitor income

About Rosie Martin

Rosie is Chief Executive of The Palace Trust, the charity that runs The Bishop’s Palace as a heritage site and visitor attraction. Prior to this, she enjoyed a 20 year career in international development and social justice in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
As Chief Executive, she juggles the needs of a growing business with increasing numbers of visitors, alongside the needs of four resident households including the Bishop of Bath and Wells, one of the most senior clerics in the Church of England.
During Rosie’s five year tenure, annual visitor income has increased by 150%. She leads a team of over 50 staff and 200 volunteers to deliver a unique experience visitors will never forget, including in visitor services, catering, gardening, marketing, maintenance and conservation, and public and private events.

Visitor numbers to The Bishop’s Palace have doubled in 5 years. This success has built reserves and an annual surplus that is reinvested in the site. Rosie provides practical advice on growing your business from diversifying audiences and attracting the family market to launching a highly successful café and catering business. She will share how marketing, building a unique play area, and an ever-changing public events programme changed the fortunes of the 800 year old Palace.
